Presentation follow-up

Hi guys,

I think that went rather well today (apart from me talking way too long). Gill called our book 'sophisticated', I don't think it gets much better than that! ;)

Monica, can you please send round the final presentation so everyone can refer to it for their reports? Also, can you please bring in the dummy and the actual book file tomorrow, so I can add them to the folder. (I want to hand everything in on Wednesday 6th, as I'm going home for a week the day after.)
And Derek, if you could then print off a copy of the slides, I'll add that to the folder as well. Thanks!

Well, I guess there's nothing left to do but write that report. Anyone dreading it as much as I am?

See you all tomorrow for the Macmillan workshop.

13th meeting - 24th April 2009

Hi guys,
Just to make sure everyone knows what they're supposed to be doing: Please send your power point slides to Monica (that's Reyes, just to rule out any c/k-infused confusion) once you're ready. They should be very basic, just white background, a headline, bullet points and pictures where wanted.

Here's the rough outline of the presentation:

Intro (Monika)
Defining + planning the project (Monika)
Target Market (Rhea)
Editorial (Paul)
Student contributions (Isy)
Design/artwork (Monica)
Rights (Sharlaine)
Production (Derek)
Marketing campaign (Rhea)
Conclusion (Monika)

Here's what we need for the folder and who's in charge of bringing it:
Pagination (Derek)
Flyer (Monika)
Email to illustrators (Monica)
Schedule (Monika)
Blog (Monika)
Dummy (Monica)
Postcards (Isy)
Rights agreement (Monika)
+ an actual folder (Monika)

I'll also bring in my copy of the book on Wednesday just in case.

Okay, so we're meeting at the Student Hub on Davies Street at 6.30 pm next Tuesday, 28th April.
See you then,
Monika

24 April meeting

Can all those who will be attending the presentation preparation meeting (hopefully everyone), please reconfirm that they will be coming on Friday 24 April at 11.00 sharp. I'll also email everyone as well.
Thanks Derek

Canon Tales

Hi guys,
I keep getting failure notices for some of your email addresses, so I thought I'd just post it here. Des sent me an email about an opportunity to showcase our book, here's what he said:

monica, I have emailed and put an announcement on blackboard about an opportunity to showcase work at the Book Fair at an event being organised by the SYP.

have a look and i hope you will enter the love and lust book - over 20 images that tell the story visually of its construction and content from student idea to completion.

Let me know what you think,

12th meeting - 18.03.2009

Hi everyone,
Totally forgot to put those notes up. Sorry about that! Well, here we go:

We suggested that we meet on 24th April to go over the presentation if that suits everyone. Probably around 11 at the college. Obviously we can change that. Depending on how long the Macmillan workshop the day before takes and where it is we might just meet after that. We can always decide that closer to the actual date.

Here's what everyone should be thinking about in terms of the presentation, maybe make some notes on what should be included, that sort of thing...

Rhea: marketing, distribution
Isy and Paul: editorial, proofreading, conclusion
Sharlaine: rights, contracts
Monica: design, commissioning artwork
Derek: production, website (+ a basic power point template)
Monika: introduction/idea, management (time + risk charts)

We thought it might make sense to structure the presentation according to the time chart, so everything would be in the order it had to be completed by. Obviously that's not set in stone, we can always see how we get on when we meet in April.

I think that's pretty much it.
Hope you're all enjoying your time off!

Presentation

Hi guys,
I know you probably don't want to think about that yet, but I think we should have a little meeting before we break up for Easter just to discuss what we need to do before the presentation.
Does next Wednesday after the lecture suit everyone?
Cheers,
Monika

imprint and copyright info

Hey guys,

Just to let you know that after looking at the books in the library who use illustrations and lyrics, they have included the copyright information on the imprint page. I have done this, but I do not have the publishing info for all poems so I have added the names of the copyright owners for now. If I can get the rest of the info (no pressure Pengles!) then I will add them in for all of them. I think it would look wierd including the info for some and not the others.

For the ones out of copyright there was no need to include them as they can be freely re-produced. If anyone thinks differently let me know.
Guys, any idea for the flaps of the jackets?

Friday, 20 February 2009

11th meeting - 20th February 2009

Name of the company: Lovely Books Press (I hope everyone can live with that.)

Monica will send the list of illustrators to Sharlaine who will write the acknowledgements and the imprint and send those back to Monica. (Apart from whatever it says in the handbook the 'Thanks'-list should include The Poetry Library and the LCC students who submitted cards for the collage.)

Isy will look after the corrections for the lust part, Paul after the love part.

Everything should be back with Monica as soon as possible so she can update the file. (Oh, and just a reminder that the final file needs to be saved as CS3 so the printers can open it.)

Monica will send round the file at the beginning of next week for us all to have a look at it, so we can take care of any final changes on Wednesday.

The file needs to be handed in next Thursday at 10.30 in the digital print room.

I don't know about you guys but I think this is going to be absolutely amazing! Can't wait to see the book!
Have a nice weekend everyone!

Tree Tree

Maria Fernanda Mantilla

Tree, tree,
Dry and green.

The girl of beautiful face
Goes gathering olives.
The winde, that suitor of towers,
Grasps her round the waist.
Four riders have passed
On Andulasian ponies,
With suits of azure and green,
And long dark cloaks.
“Come to Cordoba, lass.”
The girl pays no heed.
Three young bullfighters have passed,
Their waists are slender,
Their suits orange-coloured,
Their swords of antique silver.
“Comes to Sevilla, lass.”
The girl pays no heed.
When the evening became
Purple, with diffused light,
A youth passed by bringing
Roses and myrtles of the moon.
“Come to Granada, lass.”
But the girl pays no heed.
The girl of beautiful face
Still goes on gathering olives,
With the gray arm of the wind
Encircling her waits.

Tree, tree,
Dry and green.

10th meeting - 11th February 2009

Illustrations: Monica had already received a few at this point and was going to chase up the remaining ones.

Intro: We decided to cut the extract from Captain Corelli's Mandoline down because it was a lot longer than the quote for the lust part. The extracts won't be integrated in the actual introduction but will be printed on the facing pages. Rhea will email the intro to Monica.

Submissions: Isy will scan the cards for the spread in the middle.

Accuracy of lyrics/poems: Paul will check the poems, Rhea and Monika the lyrics they brought in.

Imprint: Sharlaine will look after this.

+ we still need to decide on the name!

9th meeting - 6th February 2009

Hiya, here are the notes for our last meeting:

We looked at the management stuff Des went through and came up with the following:

Project sponsor is the MA Publishing, with Gill and David as our supervisors.

Other key people involved: Les, Millie

Here are the possible risks we discussed:
  • No contributions from student for the spread in the middle, or unsuitable contributions (rude, bad quality)
  • Problems with the illustrations: not in on time, not the right resolution, wrong size/shape, or we just don't like them
  • Artwork/design not suitable for printing process (issues with RGB/CMYK, size, format...)
  • Printing: wrong paper, binding, issues with flip design
  • Inaccurate text
  • Illness (team members, contributos, printing department)
  • Issues due to the large size
Issues we should discuss next week:
  • We somehow need to distinguish the love and lust page numbers to avoid misunderstandings. So there should be LOVE 1, LOVE 2... and then LUST 1, LUST2... or something like that.
  • We should see if we could print a couple of inside pages just to see how they come out and to make sure the printers are okay with our files and all that.
  • Should the jacket be glossy or matt?
I think that was it. Can't wait to see those illustrations!

Names

I don't particularly love these but they have good meanings. We could just stick "publishing" on the end of these!!

aliquanto- somewhat considerably
amoveo- to take out
agnitio : recognition, knowledge.
claro : to make bright or clear, make clear in the mind.
conscientia : conscience, consciousness, knowledge
consilium : advice, suggestion, wisdom, plan, purpose, judgment
corroboro : to strengthen
incito : to excite, spur, inspire, increase / hasten, urge on.
indico : to proclaim, make publicly known, announce, disclose.
narro : to make known, say, speak, narrate.
prolecto : to entice, allure.

Imprint

Hi guys- this is one of the imprints for the book. If there is anything else you think we should add let me know. We could add the illustrators names and mention they "assert their moral rights to be identified as the illustrators of this work" like what is written in other publications?

This book was published in Great Britain in 2009 by Lovely Book Publishers (to be revised once we have a name) at the London College of Communication, Elephant & Castle, London, SE1 6SB.

Printed and bound in Great Britain by... (once confirmed I will add this)

Size and bleed

Please note: The trimmed size of Love and Lust is 290 x 290 mm (not 270 x 270 mm as mentioned in Monica's minutes - my fault I think!

The artwork should be supplied as separate pages (not facing pages) as high res PDFs (RGB) with 3mm bleed - where required - on the top, bottom and right hand side on right pages (odd page numbers) and on the top, bottom and left hand side on left pages (even page numbers).

Cover and Imprint

Regarding the cover, on investigation the size is too big to print using the LCC digital system, but a way round it is to have a plain card cover and have a loose printed jacket over this (rather like hard-back books have) - the cover can be printed on one of the large LCC inkjet printers. I have asked for prices. Moniker is getting the artwork for this produced and I attach a specification for her to use. I think it will look very effective!

Regarding the name of the imprint I feel we should stick with Lovely Books Press (or Lovely Books Publishing) as there seems to me little advantage in introducing a new name at this stage, especially as we are now well known (and kind of affectionately too!) as the Lovely Book Group - I feel it might cause confusion if we change it now.

8th meeting - 4th February 2009

Hi guys,
Here's what we discussed yesterday:

Introduction: If possible we'd like a general introduction that can go at the beginning of both sides of the book followed by a section that is specific to lust and love respectively. The tone should be serious but definitely have a light touch.

Title: Do we still want some sort of subtitle? Should we have a "logo" with love and lust where "love" or "lust" is highlighted for the respective sections? Is it "Love and Lust", "Love vs Lust", "Love/Lust"...?

Our company: So far we agreed that it's a publishing house that does arty books, maybe the kind of gift books you'd find in Urban Outfitters. Any more thoughts on that?

With a size of 270x270 cms per page will we be able to print the cover at the college? As it is one illustration for both covers it might be too big for the digital printer at LCC.

We still need a name for our publishing company and a definite title. Suggestions to be posted on the blog.

Oh, and I talked to Gill today. We definitely have to include distribution and marketing stuff, but we don't have to go through the whole thing in detail. She said it'd be enough if we explain how we'd go about the whole thing. For example we could approach a bigger publisher with a similar list and ask if they would be willing to do distrbibution for us. Gill said that would most likely work out cheaper than getting our own distrbiution chanel. In terms of marketing she said we just have to make sure we think about our audience but we don't need an all planned out marketing strategy.

See you all tomorrow,
M x

Eve to The Serpent by Fleur Adcock- this poet is still alive so she would own the copyright. Her publisher is Bloodaxe Books.
Anyone got any preferences for any of the quotations below? It would be to put at the start of the description of what the book is about. Or anyone can add one of their own!

The desire of love is to give. The desire of lust is to get.
(Ed Cole)

Love begins with an image; lust with a sensation. (Mason Cooley)

Lust is what keeps you wanting to do it even when you have no desire to be with each other. Love is what makes you want to be with each other even when you have no desire to do it. (Judith Viorst)

7th meeting, 30th January 09

Here are the things we need to check/think about... :

  • If we're having two "front covers" where should the blurb go? Do we even need one? If so, should we have cover flaps?
  • The texts and their authors need to be checked.
  • Two intros need to be written, one for love, one for lust.
  • We need a piece of prose for the lust side to mirror the passage from Captain Corelli's Mandolin.
  • Any ideas in terms of a subtitle?
  • How should we call ourselves? Should we stick with Lovely Book Group or do we want a different name?
  • Do we still want the website and if so, what are our options there?
I think those were the main issues. I sent you the schedule via email cause I couldn't figure out how to attach it here.

Oh, and those illustrations are absolutely amazing! I'm looking forward to seeing the ones for the book!
See you all Wednesday,
Monika

Shame I didn't see this before Friday. I think it's different from what we have. What does anyone say to substituting this for one of the lust pieces chosen - I'd suggest Bright Eyes or New Young Pony Club but the i would, wouldn't I?

6th meeting 23rd January 2009

Backup plan in case we don't get enough submissions: either get the other on the course involved or do some cards ourselves, or just have a double-spread illustration in the middle of the book that combines the love and lust theme.
On Wednesday we will put up the boxes and ask people in the canteen to fill in some cards.

The poems etc we will use are as follows:

Love:
  • Poem to my daughter Io (or Lo?)
  • Audible - Nick Laird
  • Tree Tree
  • Text
  • Soon
  • The Voice
  • Be Still My Heart (The Postal Service)
  • Bold as Love (Jimi Jendrix)
Lust:
  • RĂ©gime de Vere - John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester
  • Gift
  • One Night Stand (The Rifles)
  • Lover I Don't Have To Love (Bright Eyes)
  • Against Coupling
  • Ice Cream (New Young Pony Club)
  • Eve To The Serpent (Fleur Adcock)
  • Nicole and Carina
I couldn't find the authors of most of the poems, I take it Paul has them somewhere?

We also talked about the website. If we have enough time we might video ourselves reading the poems and maybe even cut the videos in some sort of clever way.

Also, do we want a subtitle or do we just want to leave it at "Love and Lust"?

5th meeting 22nd January 2009

Monica suggested that we don't do the double-faced book after all but concentrate on the dark side of love throughout. After discussing it we decided to stick with the love-lust idea as it should give us enough opportunity to include "dark" kinds of love and as it sets us apart from other collections of poems.
We also decided against headings or arranging the poems according to subject matters as it might be hard to categorise some of them.
Isy and Rhea will draft a foreword and credits.
Derek will come up with a revised pagination.
Suggestions for poems etc will be sent to Paul who will bring in a selection on Friday, so we can all decide together which ones should go into the book.

4th meeting 21st january 2009

Hi guys,
Sorry for not putting this up earlier, but here are the notes of last week's meetings.

Monica suggested to make a double-faced book. One side will be love and the other one lust, with two covers. Where the two sections meet in the middle, we will have a double spread with the scrapbook-style submissions.
In terms of pages, 48 should be enough, leaving us with 16 spreads for poems etc in total, so eight for love and eight for lust.
Sharlaine will check if we can put up a box in the library for submissions.
Monika will go to the print room and see if we can get them to cut up some paper in postcard-size.
We will have to decide which poems etc we want to use by Friday, so Monica can get in touch with the illustrators as soon as possible to give them enough time to illustrate the pages.
Hi Guys,

Derek- I really like that extract from Captain corelli's... if we can add that i would agree to that, but I suppose Paul has the final say lol.

Monica those illustrators look amazing! I think Rhea and Isy were doing intro but I can help if need be.

hi guys!

Who was going to do the brief/introduction of the book?

I think is important to write what the book is going to be about so i can send it to the illustrators along with the poem , so they have an overall view of what they are involve in, and we can all speak the same language.

Thesse are some lyrics by Jesse Bauer:

Lust is my Disease

(Verse I) I can taste your lips
At my finger tips
Though you’re still so far away
I can feel you every day Tragic endings now
It’s hard to live without
Your breath upon my skin
And the way we used to sin

(Bridge I)
And so I whisper
It’s true that love has left me
But it’s lust that leaves me empty
And sometimes I screamIt’s true that love has left me
But it’s lust that leaves me empty!

(Chorus)
The breathing, the moaning, the screaming
Was always the best part
The lusting, the loathing, the beatings
Broke everything but my heart

(Verse II)
Drink another down
Drink enough to drown
But still I feel you breathe
Desiring your reprieve
Passion at its end
Dead, forgotten
Now it all means nothing
And always, it means nothing

(Bridge II)
And so I whisper
It’s true that love has left me
But it’s lust that leaves me empty
And sometimes I scream
It’s true that love has left me
But it’s lust that leaves me empty!

(Chorus)

(Breakdown)
Oh, a life without a heart
Isn’t easy to conceive
But your body is an art
And lust is my disease

(Chorus x2)

Oh, I’m empty now.

Jesse Bauer

This is an extract from A Clockwork Orange, but it might be a bit much to add. Not sure if any of you guys have read it but it is when the writers wife is raped by the gang. Could be the evil side of lust ???

... So he did the strong man on the devotchka...while I ripped away at this and that and the other...and real good horrorshow groodies they were that then exhibited their pink glazzies, O my brothers, while I untrussed and got ready for the plunge...then after me it was right old Dim should have his turn, which he did in a beasty snorty howly sort of a way...while I held on to her. Then there was a changeover...and Pete and Georgie had theirs. Then there was like quiet and we were full of like hate...but we were all feeling that big shagged and fagged and fashed, it having been an evening of some small energy expenditure, my brothers...

Hiya dudes,

Hey Guys-
Good idea Monica- I think that is a great way to get illustrators involved in our project and using your contacts!

I'm not going to copy and paste all the poems on this site, (poemhunter.com) however the link below contain poems about lust

http://www.poemhunter.com/poems/lust/

and the other link below contains poems on love

http://www.poemhunter.com/poems/love/

I don;t have a particular favourite but if any of you like these, we can choose the ones we wish to use.

The information of copyright of these poems are on this link- http://www.poemhunter.com/PoemHunter/show.asp?p=Copyright/inc_copyright.htm

It basically says that those who own the publishing rights to the poems own the copyright, and not necessarily poemhunter.com. They adhere to US copyright law (not sure how this differs to ours but I can investigate) and they mentioned if anyone has questions to contact them. So if we were going to use any of these poems I could contact them regarding our project?...

Observer Article from Sunday.

Hi gang, I've had a look through my poetry library for some tidbits. Not really advocating for inclusion, just to give examples of some love/lust poems that have stuck in my mind over the years. I guess you probably don't like poetry as much as I do/did but I can promise you this: it will be less effort for you to read than it has been for me to type! :)

See you Wednesday

Régime de Vere - John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester

I rise at eleven, I dine about two,
I get drunk before seven, and the next thing I do,
I send for my whore, when for fear of the clap,
I spend in her hand, and I spew in her lap;
Then we quarrel and scold, till I fall fast asleep,
When the bitch growing bold, to my pocket does creep.

Then slyly she leaves me, and to avenge the affront,
At once she bereaves me of money and cunt.
If by chance when I wake, hot-headed and drunk,
What a coil do I make for the loss of my punk!
I storm and I roar, and I fall in a rage.
And missing my whore, I bugger my page.
Then crop-sick all morning I rail at my men.
And in bed I lie yawning till eleven again.

[simply marvellous in my opinion. A must]

I, being born a woman and distressed - Edna St Vincent Millay

I, being born a woman and distressed
By all the needs and notions of my kind,
Am urged by your propinquity to find
Your person fair, and feel a certain zest
To bear your body's weight upon my breast;
So subtly is the fume of life designed,
To clarify the pulse and cloud the mind,
And leave me once again undone, possessed.
Think not for this, however, the poor treason
Of my stout blood against my staggering brain,
I shall remember you with love, or season
My scorn with pity, - let me make it plain:
I find this frenzy insufficient reason
For conversation when we meet again.

[I find this rather arch, good manifesto for women sleeping around and not giving a shit]

Imperial - Don Paterson

Is it normal to get this wet? Baby I'm frightened -
I covered her mouth with my own;
she lay in my arms till the storm-window brightened
and stood at our heads like a stone

After months of jaw jaw, determined that neither
win ground, or the handed the edge,
we gave ourselves up, one to the other
like prisoners over a bridge

and no trade was ever so fair or so tender;
so where was the flaw in the plan,
the night we lay down on the flag of surrender
and woke on the flag of Japan

[The final image is a bit wrong, isn't it? Horribly macho, but that's what he does]

Gift - Neil Rollinson

I stand in the dark garden and watch
as the neighbour's daughter, unclothed
and just sixteen, combs her long red hair.
I stand there open-mouthed at this
sudden gift, every inch of her a miracle
of naked beauty, she smiles and combs,
and looks right at me, unabashed, except
she can't see me at all, and is only looking
at her own reflection in the glass.
I'm snared, a creature mesmerized
by the cobra's gaze. I daren't move
or even look away in case she sees me
standing here, watching. She turns,
to see herself side-on: the shape of her breasts,
her belly, the curve of her arse, then turns
to me again, her arms wide open, grips
the curtains and pulls them shut. A chill
runs through me, like Actaeon must have felt
in the woods. I hear the dogs bark in the suburbs,
the way they bark when something dies,
or is lost, like youth, or love, or innocence.

[pretty purvey really. Could be illustrated with some Balthus - Polish dude who painted jailbaite]

Poem - Jim Carrol

Yesterday you past
into your lips. . . your hips
and your breasts
a poor unconsumated memory

we spend sick days
was tragic sometimes
sometimes was silly

but sometimes it was on a sweet log
on a long walk after dinner
in your windy warm energy jeans

fingers touching.

[I picked this from his book because it was clearly about love - kinda sweet maybe]

Lament 8 - Jan Kochanowski

The void that fills my house is so immense
Now that my girl is gone. It baffles sense:
We are all here, yet no one else is, I feel;
The flight of one small soul has tipped the scale.
You talked for all of us, you sang for all,
You played in every nook and cubbyhole.
You never would have made your mother brood
Nor father think too much for his own good;
The house was carefree. Everybody laughed.
You held us in your arms: our hearts would lift.
Now emptiness reigns here; the house is still;
Nobody ever laughs nor ever will.
Now your old haunts have turned to haunts of pain,
And every heart is hankering again.

[If this seems a bit odd, it's a 16th century Polish dude's lament over his dead kid daughter - different kind of love, I guess]

You're - Sylvia Plath

Clownlike, happiest on your hands,
Feet to the stars, and moon-skulled,
Gilled like a fish. A common-sense
Thumbs-down on the dodo's mode.
Wrapped up in yourself like a spool,
Trawling your dark as owls do.
Mute as a turnip from the Fourth
Of July to All Fool's Day,
O high-riser, my little loaf.

Vague as fog and looked for like mail.
Farther off than Australia.
Bent-backed like Atlas, our travelled prawn.
Snug as a bud and at home
Like a sprat in a pickle jug.
A creel of eels, all ripples.
Jumpy as a Mexican bean.
Right, like a well-done sum.
A clean slate, with your own face on.

[about an unborn kid presumably. Quite mellow for her]

Jamesian - Thom Gunn

Their relationship consisted
In discussing if it existed.

[dude is gay, which doesn't come across here. I thought this was fairly amusing]
Advertisements [?]

A Small Hotel - Selima Hill

My nipples tick
like little bombs of blood.

Someone is walking
in the yard outside.

I don't know why
Our Lord was crucified.

A really good fuck
makes me feel like custard

[I *love* this poem. Another must in my humble opinion]

Image Commission

Almost three years ago I founded a society of Colombian illustrators and designers where the main idea is to promote new and fresh talent and to encourage it through exhibitions. In addition, lectures, workshops and art schools are promoted; exhibitions and events are organized; and there is always space for open discussion, career guidance and job opportunities. You can see it here.

On the last day of last term, David ask me if it was possible to organize an exhibition at LCC with the people of my association, as I told him at the begining of the first term on our tutor meeting that we had organized a very nice exhibition recently in Honk Kong. You can see photos here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/27152431@N02/

So, I was thinking that we can work with them by posting a competition, where the reward for them will be to be publish in our book and to be part of an exhibition in London where the book and its images will be shown.

This will be very good to try to encourage people to help us with the images as nobody wants to work for free, and even they will be publish, this will be in a very small amount and a lot people would think is not worth the effort and time.

Plus, we have all David's support and I think him, Des and Gill will be happy to do an exhibition of a book that was a result of their master and because is something they can show to futures promotions and dean.

I think it will be a good idea to use the resources that we already have, as this will save us time and is a very good resource but, anyway, is just an idea, is up to you guys :)

Check out the sites :P

3rd meeting 16.01.2009

Another suggestion for a theme was "fight or flight".
But it looks like we made a decision and are going for "love and lust". Hopefully everyone is happy with that. ;)

The roles in the group:
Monica: design
Derek: production, website
Paul: commissioning editor
Sharlaine: rights
Rhea: marketing
Isy: editorial
Monika: project manager

Some tasks require a bit more work than others, so everyone will help out where necessary.
Also, each member can come up with an idea for one double page spread. This could be a poem, lyrics, prose, factual text or anything to do with "love and lust".

Rhea will write copy for the flyers we need for our submissions thingy. As soon as we have the flyers and the cards, we'll hand them out in the cafeteria during lunch and ask people to put their thoughts, ideas, confessions... on love and lust on them and we'll collect them. Hopefully, we'll get enough useful stuff for a scrapbook-like double page spread.

Have a nice weekend, everyone!

2nd meeting 15.01.2009

Just to keep a log of our meetings, here are the themes we discussed yesterday:
- love
- London
- transgression
- holidays
- the kiss
- perversion
- cause and effect
- London now and then
- famous last words
- drinking
- kinky stuff

First meeting 14.01.2009

Hi guys,
Here are the notes I took during our first meeting.

Issues we need to think about:
- size
- copyright (shouldn't be a problem as we're not selling the thing)
- should we use well-known poems/lyrics or commission stuff?
- theme
- contributors (BA illustration...)
- pagination
- hardcover
- title

Themes:
- love (this would tie in with Valentine's Day when it comes to marketing)
different types of love
if we use songs and poetry we could get random people on the street to sing the songs and put that on the website

Illustrations:
- Should we use just photographs or just illustrations? A mixture might not be very consistent
- Ho will we go about commissioning illustrators/photographers?

Title:
- Monica suggested "10 ways of love"

I think that's it, hope I didn't forget anything.

Hey-

The website below suggests themes for books. It mentions love and a few others which may be of interest.

Book Shop Research

Hey - Rhea, Paul, Monica and I went to Waterstones in Picadilly Circus. We visited the poetry, music and art sections.
Poetry
There were not many illustrated poetry books (although Rhea did ask) however one that we came across had had written text and illustrations across all the pages, which looked effective. If we were using illustrations, it might be nice to do it this way. This book had a love theme, with illustrations related to the poetry.

Music
Prince had an interesting book full of photographs, poetry, and lyrics and a CD. This worked as it contained great original photographs, and the lyrics and poetry were related to the photos and the 21 day tour he did. The idea of using music lyrics and poetry within a photographic book was interesting.

Art
There was a great book which contained secrets/confessions of ordinary people. These secrets were written in various fonts, some in a handwritten style over various images that related to the text. The author wrote it took 2 yrs to collect these thoughts (over 350) for the book. So an idea was to collect the thoughts of others based on the theme of the book we decided on, perhaps by putting a box in LCC or maybe the other collages to add to the book. We would provide information to explain what we wanted, or write some ourselves. If we were using love we could ask for their thoughts on that, or perhaps pose questions for them to answer.

Once we decided on the theme we could include poetry, lyrics and these collection of thoughts with the images we wish to use, instead of using just poetry, or just lyrics.

I hope you like it!
