Guys, Any ideas for the flaps of the jackets?

imprint and copyright info

Hey guys,

Just to let you know that after looking at the books in the library who use illustrations and lyrics, they have included the copyright information on the imprint page. I have done this, but I do not have the publishing info for all poems so I have added the names of the copyright owners for now. If I can get the rest of the info (no pressure Pengles!) then I will add them in for all of them. I think it would look wierd including the info for some and not the others.

For the ones out of copyright there was no need to include them as they can be freely re-produced. If anyone thinks differently let me know.
Guys, any idea for the flaps of the jackets?

11th meeting - 20th February 2009

Name of the company: Lovely Books Press (I hope everyone can live with that.)

Monica will send the list of illustrators to Sharlaine who will write the acknowledgements and the imprint and send those back to Monica. (Apart from whatever it says in the handbook the 'Thanks'-list should include The Poetry Library and the LCC students who submitted cards for the collage.)

Isy will look after the corrections for the lust part, Paul after the love part.

Everything should be back with Monica as soon as possible so she can update the file. (Oh, and just a reminder that the final file needs to be saved as CS3 so the printers can open it.)

Monica will send round the file at the beginning of next week for us all to have a look at it, so we can take care of any final changes on Wednesday.

The file needs to be handed in next Thursday at 10.30 in the digital print room.

I don't know about you guys but I think this is going to be absolutely amazing! Can't wait to see the book!
Have a nice weekend everyone!

Tree Tree

Maria Fernanda Mantilla

Tree, tree,
Dry and green.

The girl of beautiful face
Goes gathering olives.
The winde, that suitor of towers,
Grasps her round the waist.
Four riders have passed
On Andulasian ponies,
With suits of azure and green,
And long dark cloaks.
“Come to Cordoba, lass.”
The girl pays no heed.
Three young bullfighters have passed,
Their waists are slender,
Their suits orange-coloured,
Their swords of antique silver.
“Comes to Sevilla, lass.”
The girl pays no heed.
When the evening became
Purple, with diffused light,
A youth passed by bringing
Roses and myrtles of the moon.
“Come to Granada, lass.”
But the girl pays no heed.
The girl of beautiful face
Still goes on gathering olives,
With the gray arm of the wind
Encircling her waits.

Tree, tree,
Dry and green.

10th meeting - 11th February 2009

Illustrations: Monica had already received a few at this point and was going to chase up the remaining ones.

Intro: We decided to cut the extract from Captain Corelli's Mandoline down because it was a lot longer than the quote for the lust part. The extracts won't be integrated in the actual introduction but will be printed on the facing pages. Rhea will email the intro to Monica.

Submissions: Isy will scan the cards for the spread in the middle.

Accuracy of lyrics/poems: Paul will check the poems, Rhea and Monika the lyrics they brought in.

Imprint: Sharlaine will look after this.

+ we still need to decide on the name!

9th meeting - 6th February 2009

Hiya, here are the notes for our last meeting:

We looked at the management stuff Des went through and came up with the following:

Project sponsor is the MA Publishing, with Gill and David as our supervisors.

Other key people involved: Les, Millie

Here are the possible risks we discussed:
  • No contributions from student for the spread in the middle, or unsuitable contributions (rude, bad quality)
  • Problems with the illustrations: not in on time, not the right resolution, wrong size/shape, or we just don't like them
  • Artwork/design not suitable for printing process (issues with RGB/CMYK, size, format...)
  • Printing: wrong paper, binding, issues with flip design
  • Inaccurate text
  • Illness (team members, contributos, printing department)
  • Issues due to the large size
Issues we should discuss next week:
  • We somehow need to distinguish the love and lust page numbers to avoid misunderstandings. So there should be LOVE 1, LOVE 2... and then LUST 1, LUST2... or something like that.
  • We should see if we could print a couple of inside pages just to see how they come out and to make sure the printers are okay with our files and all that.
  • Should the jacket be glossy or matt?
I think that was it. Can't wait to see those illustrations!

Names

I don't particularly love these but they have good meanings. We could just stick "publishing" on the end of these!!

aliquanto- somewhat considerably
amoveo- to take out
agnitio : recognition, knowledge.
claro : to make bright or clear, make clear in the mind.
conscientia : conscience, consciousness, knowledge
consilium : advice, suggestion, wisdom, plan, purpose, judgment
corroboro : to strengthen
incito : to excite, spur, inspire, increase / hasten, urge on.
indico : to proclaim, make publicly known, announce, disclose.
narro : to make known, say, speak, narrate.
prolecto : to entice, allure.

Imprint

Hi guys- this is one of the imprints for the book. If there is anything else you think we should add let me know. We could add the illustrators names and mention they "assert their moral rights to be identified as the illustrators of this work" like what is written in other publications?

This book was published in Great Britain in 2009 by Lovely Book Publishers (to be revised once we have a name) at the London College of Communication, Elephant & Castle, London, SE1 6SB.

Printed and bound in Great Britain by... (once confirmed I will add this)

Size and bleed

Please note: The trimmed size of Love and Lust is 290 x 290 mm (not 270 x 270 mm as mentioned in Monica's minutes - my fault I think!

The artwork should be supplied as separate pages (not facing pages) as high res PDFs (RGB) with 3mm bleed - where required - on the top, bottom and right hand side on right pages (odd page numbers) and on the top, bottom and left hand side on left pages (even page numbers).

Cover and Imprint

Regarding the cover, on investigation the size is too big to print using the LCC digital system, but a way round it is to have a plain card cover and have a loose printed jacket over this (rather like hard-back books have) - the cover can be printed on one of the large LCC inkjet printers. I have asked for prices. Moniker is getting the artwork for this produced and I attach a specification for her to use. I think it will look very effective!

Regarding the name of the imprint I feel we should stick with Lovely Books Press (or Lovely Books Publishing) as there seems to me little advantage in introducing a new name at this stage, especially as we are now well known (and kind of affectionately too!) as the Lovely Book Group - I feel it might cause confusion if we change it now.

8th meeting - 4th February 2009

Hi guys,
Here's what we discussed yesterday:

Introduction: If possible we'd like a general introduction that can go at the beginning of both sides of the book followed by a section that is specific to lust and love respectively. The tone should be serious but definitely have a light touch.

Title: Do we still want some sort of subtitle? Should we have a "logo" with love and lust where "love" or "lust" is highlighted for the respective sections? Is it "Love and Lust", "Love vs Lust", "Love/Lust"...?

Our company: So far we agreed that it's a publishing house that does arty books, maybe the kind of gift books you'd find in Urban Outfitters. Any more thoughts on that?

With a size of 270x270 cms per page will we be able to print the cover at the college? As it is one illustration for both covers it might be too big for the digital printer at LCC.

We still need a name for our publishing company and a definite title. Suggestions to be posted on the blog.

Oh, and I talked to Gill today. We definitely have to include distribution and marketing stuff, but we don't have to go through the whole thing in detail. She said it'd be enough if we explain how we'd go about the whole thing. For example we could approach a bigger publisher with a similar list and ask if they would be willing to do distrbibution for us. Gill said that would most likely work out cheaper than getting our own distrbiution chanel. In terms of marketing she said we just have to make sure we think about our audience but we don't need an all planned out marketing strategy.

See you all tomorrow,
M x

Eve to The Serpent by Fleur Adcock- this poet is still alive so she would own the copyright. Her publisher is Bloodaxe Books.
Anyone got any preferences for any of the quotations below? It would be to put at the start of the description of what the book is about. Or anyone can add one of their own!

The desire of love is to give. The desire of lust is to get.
(Ed Cole)

Love begins with an image; lust with a sensation. (Mason Cooley)

Lust is what keeps you wanting to do it even when you have no desire to be with each other. Love is what makes you want to be with each other even when you have no desire to do it. (Judith Viorst)

7th meeting, 30th January 09

Here are the things we need to check/think about... :

  • If we're having two "front covers" where should the blurb go? Do we even need one? If so, should we have cover flaps?
  • The texts and their authors need to be checked.
  • Two intros need to be written, one for love, one for lust.
  • We need a piece of prose for the lust side to mirror the passage from Captain Corelli's Mandolin.
  • Any ideas in terms of a subtitle?
  • How should we call ourselves? Should we stick with Lovely Book Group or do we want a different name?
  • Do we still want the website and if so, what are our options there?
I think those were the main issues. I sent you the schedule via email cause I couldn't figure out how to attach it here.

Oh, and those illustrations are absolutely amazing! I'm looking forward to seeing the ones for the book!
See you all Wednesday,
Monika
